The Ultimate Underdog Story: Winter Precipitation
Wednesday, February 3rd:
We’ve seen some snowy winters the past few years, but this year seems to be different. By early February, SHA had not experienced even one snow day. I seem to recall having nearly two weeks gone due to snow by this time last year. So where exactly are these snow days? Global warming, care to explain? Students around me are restless; little kids are furious! Having no snow days has brought out a scary side to children and parents alike! I recommend staying inside and locking your doors –not to save heat, but to save yourself from these agitated kids!
Friday, February 5th:
This morning, my father knocked on my door and told me I had a snow day. Could it really be true? I struggled to find my glasses on my nightstand to look out my window and see the fluffy stuff that was the cause of such surprising news! Never finding my glasses and eventually giving up on trying to see outside, I rolled over and fell back to sleep. If this is a trick my dad is playing on me and I actually do have school, he can take the blame for my absence. Close to five hours later, I finally got out of bed and, lo and behold, my father had not been kidding around this a.m. The outdoors was sparkling white and nature had finally given the raging kids their antidote.
Sunday, February 7th:
Ha-ha! Snow storm due to arrive tomorrow, the Monday after the Superbowl! What a lovely present thrown directly to Connecticut’s end zone by Cam Newton of the Carolina Panthers. Oh, yikes, it was fumbled! Mother Nature won it for the Connecticut schools.
Saturday, February 13th:
What a series of events. Just when students all over the state were beginning to believe we wouldn’t see a white Christmas, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, or Valentine’s Day, the elements came together and gave these hard-working students a bit of luck.
When I began to write this piece, I felt I could be writing for nothing. What purpose did I really have? It would only be a sad, hopeless recount of the misery of a snow-less winter. I doubted whether I should write this article at all, for it would only dampen spirits even more. But as I kept writing and let the days pass, I discovered a true underdog story. No one expected the snow to come out on top this February. No one felt like even the wildest blizzard could give kids a break, even just for a day. Yet the story evolved and we all saw the magic of snow and the underdog of this school year (like the Denver Broncos). Let the snow fall where it may!
