Super Bowl LI 2017
The Super Bowl is a football game that brings families together (even non-sports fans!) and it has the whole nation rooting. The 51st Super Bowl in 2017 took place on Sunday, February 5. This year the Atlanta Falcons took on the New England Patriots. This was the first game that had ever gone to overtime! During the first to the third quarter, it seemed that the Falcons had a great start and a great lead over the Patriots with 28 to 9. But during the fourth quarter, the Patriots miraculously caught up. Then two of their key player got hurt, Tevin Coleman and Matt Ryan. After New England caught up to 20, there was a controversy about whether Edelman really caught the ball and officials called it a catch. The Patriots caught up to 28 when Chris Hogan scored the touchdown. It was overtime and Patriots won the coin toss. The Patriots took a smooth touchdown and won their 5th Super Bowl, the most in history.
One important event in Super Bowl is, of course, the halftime show. Lady Gaga performed in the Pepsi Zero Sugar Super Bowl LI Halftime Show. Though she does not get paid, the production funds for all the equipment, production costs, and expenses can range from $600,000 to $10 million (Forbes). The reason many artists agree to do the Halftime show is so that they get exposure and there will be an expected increase in their music sales. Lady Gaga started her performance at the top of the stadium singing a little bit of “God Bless America” and “This Land is Your Land.” Then she swooped down on stage and performed her hits “Born This Way,” “Poker Face,” and “The Edge of Glory.” Then, she sang “Million Reasons” while playing on the piano. She ended the Halftime show with one of her most famous hits, “Bad Romance.”
Also, we cannot forget the expensive yet memorable ads seen in the Super Bowl. According to YouTube AdBlitz, the #1 ad was Kia Motors America “Hero’s Journey”. The 2nd place ad was Netflix with Stranger Things and in 3rd place was Mr. Clean. All the ads were amazing and comedic to watch.
