The beginning of the school year is usually a time to ease into new classes and new routines. However, for the seniors at Sacred Heart, there are no such luxuries. From day one, their brains are clouded with thoughts of college applications, essays, and decisions. Things started off quickly when, after each of the first two days of school, the seniors went to workshops that explained how to fill out the applications and what makes a good college essay. Then, it was their job to make sure they kept up with the work of updating their resumes and completing the Common App questions. But, as they say, there is no rest for the weary.
Senior Application Night came shortly after. Seniors and their parents were expected to come and hear the presentation on the process of applying to schools and all the layers that come with it. Each student received a checklist that they were to fill out before they could even think of applying to a school.
However, with all of these responsibilities comes a good opportunity for growth. As Seniors, the students will soon discover a whole new level of independence when they get to college. Having tasks to complete and deadlines to meet is a great way to practice for the real world that they will soon be immersed in. Ava Demattie, SHA class of 2024, said, “I will be very relieved once the process is over. The hardest part I have found so far is writing the essay. But once you start, it becomes easier!”.
The guidance office has been working tirelessly to make sure that all the Seniors are prepared for the future. They have been bringing in colleges to speak with the students and they have been keeping everyone organized and on schedule. Jocelyn Kingsley, a senior here at SHA said, “It is cool to learn about different colleges by talking to their reps. I like hearing what they have to say about their school. It is really helpful when they come to Sacred Heart.” Mrs. Alexander, Mrs. Patel, and Mrs. Celentano are an amazing support system for the students.
The seniors have a lot of items to juggle, including classes, sports, extracurriculars, and now college. But this is an exciting time in their lives as they look to make big decisions and big changes. Fall is a busy time for the class of 2024, but they are excited for the future and all of the opportunities and experiences that come with it.
