Every year,  Sacred Heart offers new and exciting opportunities, such as a new sports teams, clubs, and even courses. I am sure this is nothing new to the students and faculty of Sacred Heart, but have you ever realized that sometimes opportunities, which have been offered at Sacred Heart for a long time, have become something entirely new? For instance, the Classics Club has received a “new look” this year under the leadership of Mrs. Delaney and Dr. Kapteyn, the moderators, alongside Katie Quinn, president, and Vivian Wang, vice president.

The Classics Club is a great way to explore the rich culture of Ancient Greece and Rome. This exploration is accomplished through learning about the many classic stories and texts created by these civilizations. The club will also teach students the cultural context of these stories. This year, the club will be focusing on Hecuba, a classic play written by Euripides, which has powerful themes about tragedy, war, refuge, revenge, and female strength. In order to receive a deep understanding of this masterpiece, the Classics Club will be reading, studying, and performing Euripides’ Hecuba. The production of Hecuba will take place outdoors on Sacred Heart’s campus this spring. If you wish to be a part of this unique experience, auditions will be held in December and are open to the whole student body. In addition to the Classics Club’s focus on ancient plays, it will also focus on Ancient Greek and Roman mythology and the influence these ancient cultures had on western civilizations.

All are welcome to join the Classics Club’s journey through ancient literature. Simply travel back in time and head on over to room 307 at 2:10 after school on Thursdays. If you cannot attend meetings every week but still wish to be posted on the activities of the Classics Clubs, join the Classics Club’s email list by providing your name and school email to one of the club’s moderators.

The Classics Club provides a casual environment where learning and discussing various aspects of these ancient cultures is comfortable and interesting. Overall, the Classics Club is a unique opportunity for students to be immersed in the cultures of the Ancient World and learn about its relevance to today’s western civilization. Vice president Vivian Wang says, “Anyone who has an interest in Roman or Greek Culture should definitely join.”
