SHA Musical: West Side Story
Every year Sacred Heart Academy has the opportunity to put on an amazing show at the historic Shubert Theatre in New Haven. This year, SHA put on an incredible performance of West Side Story. West Side Story is a captivating story about the tensions between two gangs and the consequences of violence in the streets. Our students did a terrific job of becoming their characters and bringing the story to the stage.
So many girls from Sacred Heart and boys from schools in the area played various roles in helping this performance come to life. Rose Iannaccone, class of 2016, played the role of Maria, and Lauren Celentano, also a member of the class of 2016, played Anita. These girls, along with many other talented students, put on such amazing three shows: one on Friday night, and two on Saturday. It was so great to see so many SHA Alumnae come out to support our school. Along with that, it was wonderful to see so many current students who were not involved in the play sitting out in the audience and cheering on their classmates.
Something special about the SHA musical is even if you are someone who is not really talented in the arts, there is an opportunity for anyone to join one of the various crews. There is costume crew, stage crew, prop crew, paint crew, hair and make-up crew, sound crew, and light crew. Those involved have the experience of working with professionals and seeing what really goes into making the shows come to life.
Every year a different show is put on and the people involved in it help to make it so special every time. Thank you to everyone who participated in the SHA musical performance of West Side Story, and special thanks to Mrs. Saukas and Mrs. Delaney who work tirelessly to ensure each year’s show is a huge success. So much time and effort is put in by students and teachers alike to make this show so amazing. Although tech week may be grueling, it definitely pays off when we all get to see the show center stage after months of hard work!
